2024 Meek Movers

The Carrie Meek Foundation Honors 2024 Meek Movers: Local Leaders Shaping Our History Engaging Our Communities

In celebration of Black History Month, we are privileged to honor 2024 Meek Movers, key leaders who are shaping our current history and engaging our communities though out South Florida!

This year, we recognize journalists and storytellers who amplify the impact of Black residents in our community.

Meet Jawan Strader, an Emmy award-winning journalist and one of South Florida’s most recognizable news figures. Strader co-anchors NBC 6 news, weeknights at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. with Jackie Nespral. He’s also host of Voices with Jawan Strader, a community affairs show dedicated to the Black community and the disenfranchised. Jawan brings almost 30 years of experience in journalism to the anchor desk, covering some of the biggest and most impactful stories that have touched South Florida and the country. Aside from his journalism skills, Jawan is known for the hard work he does in the community. Strader received the award of distinction for Media Coverage of Public Education by The Education Fund of Miami-Dade. And Legacy magazine named Strader one of South Florida’s most powerful and influential Black people.
Meet 2024 Meek Mover Nadege Green. Nadege is an independent researcher, writer, editor, community archivist and audio producer based in Miami, whose work centers the lived experiences of Black people in South Florida. Her practice and approach to storytelling is deeply rooted in history and first-person narratives that explore and connect issues around race, culture, climate justice, health inequities, poverty, and displacement.
Meet 2024 Meek Mover Papa Keith. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Keith Walcott first honed his skills in hip-hop and reggae clubs and built up his name in the streets. He was given a show on Miami's most notorious underground station Mixx 96, which set off his career in radio. After appearing regularly on the wildly popular "The Luke Show", Papa Keith was hired to host his own show. Three years later, Miami’s WMIB (103.5 The Beat) brought him to a position as host of their Night Show. Pape Keith is also the founder of Papa Keith People Matter (PK4PM) a non-profit foundation that provides the community with valuable resources through community events that use hip-hop to draw in young people. PK4PM also gives Millennials and Gen Z youth a voice and an opportunity to express themselves through art, music, entrepreneurship, and activism.
