Home is where the heart is. -- Pliny
To understand why The Carrie Meek Foundation is involved with Housing, all you have to do is drive along Biscayne Boulevard, a major thoroughfare that bisects Miami north and south.
New development in established areas such as the Miami Design District has grossly inflated home prices in what have traditionally been working-class, African-American neighborhoods. The accompanying spike in real estate assessments and property taxes has driven many people out of houses that have been in the hands of the same family for generations.
At the same time, condominium complexes filled with units costing half a million dollars and more are sprouting up throughout Miami and South Florida like so many concrete mushrooms.
Along Biscayne Boulevard and throughout South Florida, wage earners of all ethnicities are being priced out of the housing market. That's unacceptable, given that it's within our means to address that unfortunate scenario.
That's why The Carrie Meek Foundation is working with area developers, lending institutions, government agencies and other non-profit organizations to facilitate the creation of hundreds of Housing units in Miami-Dade County.
Toward that end the Foundation has launched The SOUL LIVES in THE CITY campaign in an effort to provide quality affordable housing to current residents of District 5 and to encourage former residents to come back to the community. Additional information and a pre-application are available here: The SOUL LIVES in THE CITY
The Foundation's aim is to prevent industrious taxpayers from exhausting the bulk of their incomes simply to have a nice, safe place to live. We understand that the ability to purchase a $600,000 home or make a $1,200 monthly rent payment needn't be a requisite for enjoying the American Dream.
