"He who has health, has hope. And he who has hope has
everything." -- Arabian proverb
Of the nearly 16 million people
living in Florida, more than half - 8.6 million -- are medically
underserved, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services. Out of that 8.6 million, 2.25 million reside in South
Florida.
In light of those eye-opening statistics, it should
come as little surprise that The Carrie Meek Foundation has made
Healthcare one of its primary focus areas.
The Foundation will impact South Florida's healthcare
landscape through establishing healthcare clinics in underserved
communities, organizing healthcare screenings and facilitating job
fairs and seminars geared toward encouraging minority youths to
pursue health sciences careers.
In terms of the Carrie Meek Foundation's decision
to establish healthcare clinics in South Florida, the need for these
facilities couldn't be more pressing. The Foundation will facilitate
the creation of a clinic in Miami-Dade and another in Broward, the
South Florida counties with the highest numbers of medically underserved.
From a diagnostic/preventative standpoint, The
Carrie Meek Foundation will coordinate healthcare screenings in
impoverished black and Hispanic Miami-Dade and Broward neighborhoods.
These screenings will concentrate in particular on the detection
and treatment of prostate cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and lupus.
Prior to becoming a congressional representative,
Carrie Meek was a longtime South Florida educator. So naturally
her Foundation's healthcare initiative has an educational component.
The objective here is to enlighten minority youths
regarding the multitude of career opportunities in the health sciences
profession. To accomplish this, the Foundation will facilitate educational
programs and job fairs at high schools located in Miami-Dade and
Broward counties.
Finally, The Carrie Meek Foundation will host periodic
networking/educational events for minority South Florida healthcare
providers to keep them in the loop regarding the Foundation's healthcare
initiatives.
